Implementing low power HMI with Nuvoton ISD9160

ISD9160 is the first of a new generation of Nuvoton's audio ChipCorder devices based on the Cortex-M0processor. It includes of a 32bit processor, along with the usual audio recording and playback functions that are already available in earlier ChipCorder devices. Additional capabilities such as touch sense and five power saving modes are touted to make the ISD9160 an ideal platform for implementing an ultra-low power Human-Machine Interface (HMI).
To fully exploit the features in the ISD9160 for maximum power savings, the software implementation must be planned well. In particular, the method chosen for the HMI interface to schedule tasks has a big impact on the total power consumption. Observations during testing have shown that average power consumption can vary from a dozen milliamps to as low as a few micro amps, while achieving the same functionality. Careful tuning of the software is essential to achieve an HMI implementation with very low power consumption while providing good response to user inputs. |
